PEEQUAL - the UK's first squat & go sustainable women's urinal
PEEQUAL is the UK's first squat & go sustainable women's urinal

Welcome to NEXUS Startup Diaries, the number one place to discover the hottest and most inspiring startups and founders.
Today we're excited to meet Amber Probyn, co-founder of PEEQUAL Ltd
So Amber, tell us more about PEEQUAL
PEEQUAL is the UK's first squat & go sustainable women's urinal. It solves the problem of women waiting up to 34x longer than men just to use the toilet.
We launched at Glastonbury in 2022, since then we've made a splash within the festival and event industry, with over 1 million users, getting women out of the queues and back to their event.
It started as a research project at Bristol university but after we spoke to women about the problem, it was clear our idea had legs. Almost 5 years later, myself and co-founder are based in Bristol, working on making women's urinals a standard facility alongside men's urinals and portable toilets.
Our mission is to pioneer pee-equality for all women, everywhere.

How did you come up with the business idea and what problem are you looking to solve?
It began as a Masters project at university- we were asked to 'solve a real-world problem' and as both co-founders experienced the queues for the loo, especially at festivals, we decided to find out why this was so widely accepted/ why there was such an unequal provision for women.
What made you want to start your own business?
I studied Anthropology with Innovation, my co-founder, Hazel, studied Physics with Innovation. The innovation side of our degree definitely helped guide our thinking towards starting our own business.
Growing up, both of us were creative and enjoyed being hands-on and bringing ideas to life.

What stage is your business currently at?
We are just about to manufacture our scale up product. This product has been designed to be rolled out efficiently with external distributers, therefore PEEQUAL can access more women, much faster.
What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
Being in control of your own time. It's easy to change things up if you don't like it and you have the freedom to choose what you focus on, most of the time!
What is the number one business tip you've learned that you'd like to share with fellow budding entrepreneurs?
Always be hungry to learn and follow up every lead, you never know where it can bring you to.
Who are your startup heroes?
I want to say my dad, he is an artist and started at the bottom of our garden and at village fetes, now he is selling sculpture to city councils and has won awards for his work at many high brow events.
Watching his journey has always been encouraging to me.
Is there a favourite podcast, book or series you'd like to share with the world?
To he honest, if I have free time I usually go outside walking, hammocking etc as it helps more than any additional learning resource!
Anything else you'd like to share?
Don't be fooled by Linkedin, everyone is winging it!
Where can people find you online?
@peequaluk is our Instagram and PEEQUAL Ltd is our Linkedin. Follow along and support us as we grow!
